~ THE STATUS QUO-ITES are coming out fighting, in a new submission to the parliamentary Commission reviewing Section 13 of the Human Rights thing.

So now LEAF– or, The Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund– is a radical busy-body group who’ve minded business in many court cases, including some notable human rights debacles.

Their latest intervention is interesting for two reasons.

(1) It’s legally pretty, with all the proper footnotes, citations, and precedent-speak which is part of our legal tradition, even when radical things are being done. The equivalent is a scholar’s paper loaded with the right terminology, bits of Greek, Latin, German, and piled high with footnotes. It’s black tail and tie, with bells on, and partly a comfortable appeal to the lawyerly sort who largely populate parliament and her committee ranks. It shows the nanny-squads are getting worried, and bringing out their big words, and clearest case.

~ PASS IT ON– Part of pastoring is mentoring: handing on and lifting up others in faith, skills, abilities, understanding & knowledge, and confidence. I’ve mentored lots of folks, and been honoured with their trust and watching them grow in lots of ways, often zooming past my little store of ideas or skills before long, since a true teacher’s role is to make themselves superfluous, having handed on good and true things to others. A one-man band may be impressive, but an orchestra built up and guided and taught by one person so that each knows their role, and could also lead the others– much more lasting and powerful.

The scary word ‘tradition’ properly means just that: ‘traditio‘ or hand on to others. It’s not yours to keep: the riches of past struggles, questions, puzzles, essential questions is the distilled and purified gold of past generations of human toil and wisdom. It is a par of adolescence to put all that up to question– it is a sign of maturity to take on what is handed on, and find the good and the gold in it, and to pass it on to future people. In the Church, tradition is further understood to be the Holy Spirit alive in the debates and outworking of the church in time, warning against error, pitfalls, dead ends, and human sin and stupidity.

The extraordinary Obama! Not a week in, and it looks like he’s already pooched the Middle East for the remainder of his current term. Let’s see how we get there.

It all begins with the lefty bigotry of low expectations. You know, Arabs and blacks and poor people and whoever else is acting up, just can’t help themselves. That’s a mighty convenient position, since it neatly categorizes, absolves, and damns whole swaths of people. Also handy, since it makes such groups the objects the target of BigGov largesses and do-goodery.

Remember: a ‘progressive’ is always looking to do something to other people for their own good. Gabillions have been spent in such projects, often causing and perpetuating and rewarding segregation, an underclass, and resentment.

Comes The O

Whether Obama himself is a good thing, that a partly black man has become leader of the U.S. is a challenge the Great Society green-stamps, fatherlessness and ‘why bother’ culture in which Democrats have been pleased to keep their pocket-voters over the last 40 years. The equivalent in Canada would be the Maritime provinces: kept in debt by past Liberal leaders, so that Ottawa could keep them afloat with big-project spending– so as to curry the proper votes. Shaidle asks “Can Obama heal the rift between black men and black women?” The Rift: created, paid for, and cultivated by do-gooders on the Left and the Right for 45+ years.

In A World…

Do you like movies? I do. Good ones, anyway.

Most of the best have moral content, heroes and baddies, and ultimate concerns. Even the secular-minded long for the old stories, even if they confine absolute good and evil to movie-screens and books.

Of course, there are the uber-fans of movies, who adopt it as a serious lifestyle– faux Klingons and Hobbitses and Vader wannabees– who try to capture some of the excitement and certainty by geeking out in such a way.

Of course, there is good and evil in the real world, no matter how much modern meta-narratives might contextualize such ‘values-talk.’ Much of modern politics is a crusade, however cloaked and on behalf of non-Western devices and desires. However repressed or refangled, right and wrong, good and evil keep coming out at us, for they are part of the very fabric of reality, of the universe, of our own natures, and the nature of God. As the writer J. Budziszewski puts it in his book of the same title, there’s “What We Can’t Not Know: A Guide” about the nature of things [review here].

The difficulties of prudence and discretion– knowing when, how and what to do, in the right way– are ever with us, especially when we are all tempted to waffle, excuse our own failings & compromises, or else overstate things. Common-sense, conscience, the stated and enshrined spiritual, moral, and legal traditions are all maps to the terrain– which is why, of course, radicals seek to cast all debate adrift from such mooring points, that innovations and social engineering and top-down improvements may ensue, according to the wisdom of our self-appointed betters. All the best would-be revolutionaries are doing it!
